All learners within Art and Design will experience the Broad General Education (S1-S3). Learners have the option to study Art and Design further through the Senior Phase (S4-S6) in terms of certificated levels assessed by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

Broad General Education (S1-S3):

The Broad General Education phase from S1-S3 in Art and Design is structured in such a way that allows learners to develop their skills, capabilities and to gain experience and understanding of a wide range of practical skills and activities (Expressive, Design, Critical Art and Design Studies). The projects set within Art and Design have the aim to allow learners to develop their abilities in recording information, visually communicating their ideas and to respond to varying Art and Design contexts in an individual manner. All learners will experience working in a practical manner to help develop their confidence in media handling skills with a wide range of media and processes (two and three dimensional approaches). It is also the aim to embed the key associated Art and Design terminology/vocabulary throughout the context of practical work and to equip learners with the skills they require for moving into the Senior Phase (S4-S6) of the school.

Senior Phase (S4-S6):There are varying pathways that learners can opt to study for within the Senior Phase (S4-S6) in Art and Design. This is structured in such a way that allows learners to develop their skills, capabilities and to gain experience and understanding of a wide range of practical skills and activities (Expressive folio, Design folio, Critical Art and Design Studies Question Papers). 

Course Content/Aims:

The Art and Design course aims to provide a broad, investigative and practical experience, where creativity is the key focus. You will develop knowledge of art and design practice and to develop an understanding of expressive and design processes. 

The course comprises of three main components/areas of study:

Expressive (Practical Folio):

In this component, you will plan, research and develop creative expressive work in response to a theme/stimulus with a variety of media/working processes. You will also reflect/evaluate on your creative process.

Design (Practical Folio):

In this component, you will plan, research and develop creative design work in response to a design brief with varying stages of the design process. You will also reflect/evaluate on your creative process.

Critical (Art and Design Studies):

In this component, you will develop knowledge by studying artists and designers and their work. You will develop vocabulary/art and design terminology through answering mandatory questions and also responding to unseen prompts/images appropriately.

Assessment:

You will complete Folio work (Expressive/Design) and Critical/Art and Design Studies Question Paper Examination (all externally assessed by SQA).
