All learners within Music will experience the Broad General Education (S1-S3). Learners have the option to study Music further through the Senior Phase (S4-S6) in terms of certificated levels assessed by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

Broad General Education (S1-S2):

The S1 and S2 courses consist of four elements – Performing, Understanding Music, Creating and Music Technology. 

Learners will get the opportunity to try various instruments including keyboard, guitar, ukulele, tuned percussion, bass guitar, drum kit and voice. At the end of S1, learners will choose two instruments to focus on in preparation for taking music in S3. If learners receive instrumental lessons outside of class, this is catered for and included as part of the IMS.

Learners are introduced to music literacy and concepts as they progress through S1 and S2. This is done through a variety of activities that encourage learner participation. Examples of this include Instruments of the Orchestra, styles/Genres of music and film music. 

Learners are also given the opportunity to access our music technology software through completing projects such as remixes, radio broadcasts, podcasts and film foley. This can be taken on as a discrete subject in S3.

Senior Phase (S3-S6):

We offer two courses in the senior phase; Music and Music Technology. The National 5 - Adv Higher SQA Music course consists of three elements; Performing on two instruments, Understanding & Composition. Learners are examined in February/March for the performing component by an SQA examiner, submit a composition folio and sit a listening paper during the SQA exam diet in May. Learners will receive lessons on one instrument and are expected to practice outside class time, either at home or in Music. 

They will also be given the opportunity to take part in school concerts, assemblies and contribute to council wide ensembles such as Hillfoots Music For Youth.

The Music Technology course consists of learners creating a folio within two contexts. These can include multi track recording, live recording, radio broadcasts and film/animation foley. This is submitted around March. They also study effects and styles/genres of music before sitting a listening paper during the SQA exam diet in May.
