Aims of the Department

  • To set challenging targets with high expectations for all pupils.
  • To offer a variety of approaches for teaching and learning which will engage and motivate pupils and demand their active participation.
  • To smooth the transition for pupils between stages and ensure progression in learning throughout their time at Alloa Academy
  • To ensure that pupils are fully equipped for the world of work and further study by teaching the appropriate skills

At the end of their mathematical education in Alloa Academy, each pupil will be able:

  • To perform tasks on basic numeracy skills
  • To perform tasks using the basic mathematical skills needed in their chosen career or for entry to higher or further mathematical education
  • To understand the mathematics likely to be encountered in daily adult life
  • To reason clearly and logically, and to set out a rational argument
  • To identify patterns encountered in diverse situations and to extrapolate from these
  • To approach problems systematically, choosing appropriate techniques for their solution
  • To follow logical instructions clearly expressed
  • To experience satisfaction in and enjoyment of their mathematical achievements
  • To obtain any formal mathematical qualifications needed for their chosen career
  • To obtain their best possible results at National 3, 4, 5, Higher and Advanced Higher levels

Mathematics at Alloa Academy

  • S1/S2 pupils will follow a general course consisting of Level 2, 3, & 4
  • S3/S4 will begin preparation for and sit the National exams appropriate to their level
  • S5/6 will continue on to the next level; National 5, Higher or Advanced Higher as appropriate
  • Pupils can expect homework on a regular basis
  • At the end of each section a short assessment will monitor and direct progress
  • Parents/Carers will receive regular updates on progress and identified next steps in learning
  • Digital resources will be used extensively and it is the pupil’s responsibility to ensure they are equipped by bringing their chromebook to every lesson.
